Thanks to the publisher for an early copy of this book。 Malcolm Nance is an expert at counterterrorism and focuses in this book on the growing white nationalist/conservative insurgent threat in the United States。 Well researched and terrifying, I recommend this book for everyone who does (and doesn’t) see the writing on the wall about the future of this country。

I finished Malcolm Nance’s newest book a week before the first televised hearing of the January 6th House Committee。 Many (though not all) of the details of events on January 6th that were covered in that first hearing are also here in Nance’s book。 The value of Nance’s book is that he digs deep into the white supremacist and QAnon history that lies behind the events of that day。 The result is a book that is a stark warning of a clear and present danger to our nation。 Malcolm Nance first came to I finished Malcolm Nance’s newest book a week before the first televised hearing of the January 6th House Committee。 Many (though not all) of the details of events on January 6th that were covered in that first hearing are also here in Nance’s book。 The value of Nance’s book is that he digs deep into the white supremacist and QAnon history that lies behind the events of that day。 The result is a book that is a stark warning of a clear and present danger to our nation。 Malcolm Nance first came to public notice with his critique of waterboarding - saying that he knew it was torture because he had administered it himself。 He testified in front of the US House Judiciary Committee that “waterboarding is torture, period”。 He is a former US Navy Senior Petty Officer who specialized in cryptology。 He was an intelligence and security contractor post 9/11 in Iraq and Afghanistan。 All of which is to say that Nance has a strong background in understanding and dealing with international terrorists。Nance is an intelligence and foreign policy analyst for MSNBC。 In the last six years he has focused his attention on Trumpworld and the actions and mindset of the ex-President’s followers。 The case he makes in this book, and it is a chilling one, is that we now face domestic terrorists bent on destroying American democracy, and that the Trump presidency helped to strengthen and accelerate the work of these terrorists amongst us。Blending his expertise on al-Qaida and Trumpworld, Nance is particularly good at pointing out that the tools and methods that lead individuals to become radicalized are much the same whether the objective is extremist Islamic terrorism or QAnon fueled Trumpian insurrection。 In both cases the result has been violent extremists bent on achieving their goals regardless of the cost to others。 Thus we saw “Blue Power” Trump followers at the Capital last January 6th encouraging each other by shouting “Kill Him” about a Capital Policeman trying to keep them from storming the building。The book is strongest at the beginning when Nance lays out the “TITUS” (Trump Insurgency in the United States) threat he sees by identifying the various groups that comprise the threat, and at the end, where the events of January 6th are described。 In between the text wanders about from John Birch to Timothy McVeigh。 It’s not always easy to draw straight lines between the examples Nance describes in the book’s middle, because so much of what white supremacist and militia groups have done between acts of violence and terrorism has been undocumented。 But the documentation that Nance does bring forward is disturbing。The book presents a convincing case that in America we now have “an openly fascist movement” that desires to “install Trump as dictator”, and threatens our democracy。 Even if you believe, as I do, that Nance overstates the power of militia groups like the Proud Boys, and doesn’t distinguish enough between online rhetoric and real world actions, there is more than enough here to convince you that the threat is real。 We all would do well to take it seriously。 RATING: Four Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐NOTE: This is an ARC review。 The book is due to be available on July 12th, 2022。 。。。more

It seems like anyone who is remotely politically active already knows most of these facts, and I really don’t see anyone of opposing viewpoints (or living in alternative realities, rather) ever picking this up to peruse (which would be the people who need to hear this most)This book feels longer than it is, maybe because its a rehash of the past few terrifying years while not offering much in terms of new information or insights on how to fix the predicament we’re in。 To me this book just really highlights the dilemma we’re currently up against in our current media sphere—everyone is so siloed into their own information chambers that folks just keep regurgitating the same “news” hoping it makes a difference, but it never does, because it can never break through。 This book feels simultaneously necessary and cash-grabby somehow。 It’s like if you were listening to MSNBC punditry for 5 days straight (or however long it takes you to read this)。 See, not many people want to do that, and the ones that do are also just stuck in their own sensationalized infotainment environments (myself included)。 More than anything, the “what we can do about it” portion of this book left much to be desired。 There are two basic “solutions” that Mr Nance offers, neither of which are things that average citizens can be actively involved in。 I would have loved to hear more about what everyday citizens could do to help mend our broken social fabric, but those solutions are absent。 。。。more

Malcolm Nance is a veteran and an intelligence and foreign policy analyst who specializes in terrorism, counter-terrorism, etc。 To say he is well-versed in this area is an understatement。 On the whole, They Want to Kill Americans chronicles the history and danger of white supremacist ideology and militias in America, their rise and fall and extreme rise again, and how it culminated in the January 6 insurrection。 The rest of this review might be a bit disjointed, as I mainly want to focus on the Malcolm Nance is a veteran and an intelligence and foreign policy analyst who specializes in terrorism, counter-terrorism, etc。 To say he is well-versed in this area is an understatement。 On the whole, They Want to Kill Americans chronicles the history and danger of white supremacist ideology and militias in America, their rise and fall and extreme rise again, and how it culminated in the January 6 insurrection。 The rest of this review might be a bit disjointed, as I mainly want to focus on the major notes I took while reading。 Firstly, this book is highly detailed with dates, names, organizations (and history of those organizations)。 When talking about ideologies and extremism mounting, a *long* list of specifics to back that up definitely helps support that claim。 With these dates, organizations, and ideologies, Nance draws the connection to al Qaeda and ISIS, explaining how domestic extremist groups tend to share the same tactics, routes to joining such groups, and recruitment strategies。Overall, the author does a great job in balancing how seriously extremist ideology, Trump cultism, and white supremacist militias need to be taken and how fatally dangerous members of these groups can be with how ridiculous they are as well。 How they scream original thought and "doing your own research" while pilfering most of their schtick from movies (Red Dawn and The Matrix most often) and other extremist groups。 It chronicles the actions of white supremacists, the rise and embrace of Q-Anon, how formerly respectable Republicans opened their arms wide for Q-Anon to further themselves, and ultimately, how the Trump administration embraced Q-Anon and these other groups。 Nance highlights the ways in which Trump's administration actively embraced them, but also how these groups took messages from Trump whether he actually instructed anything or not。 Referring back to the author's inclusion of dates, organizations, actual events, and statements, Nance backs up all of these with an exhaustive list of references—references that include sources such as CNN, Politico, Washington Post, Fox News, Donald Trump's official website, Congress' website。 。。。more

They Want to Kill Americans by Malcolm Nance is a stunning portrayal of what the author calls the Trump Insurgency in the United States (TITUS)。 This book answers the question of how white nationalists, Trump supporters, and proponents of “the big lie” converged and coordinated the violent events of the January 6, 2021 Insurrection at the US Capitol building。 This book’s style is a US intelligence community member’s threat assessment of the folks who believe that the election was stolen from Don They Want to Kill Americans by Malcolm Nance is a stunning portrayal of what the author calls the Trump Insurgency in the United States (TITUS)。 This book answers the question of how white nationalists, Trump supporters, and proponents of “the big lie” converged and coordinated the violent events of the January 6, 2021 Insurrection at the US Capitol building。 This book’s style is a US intelligence community member’s threat assessment of the folks who believe that the election was stolen from Donald Trump in 2020, how these people came to believe the big lie, and the consequential law enforcement efforts to punish such January 6 insurrectionists who breached the US Capitol building。 The author chillingly concludes that the January 6 attempted coup is only the beginning of a likely long and divisive civil war between TITUS and the rest of the country (traditional Republicans (think Liz Cheney) and American liberals)。 The author also gives common believed conspiracies historical contexts (such as the Illuminati, anti-Semitic conspiracies, and the semi-newish Pizzagate satanic pedophilia conspiracy delusion)。 If you’d like to learn where TITUS gets their conspiratorial ideas, this book gives a brief guide to that。 While I fully support the author’s assertions and risk assessment regarding TITUS’s impending danger/doom and gloom, how do we as traditional Republicans or liberals convince opponents to read this book, or moreover, get them to realize there are absolute no facts that support their outlandish conspiratorial accounts? How do we fight these roots of fascism? When the pandemic has nearly killed a million American lives, is there a way in which we can get TITUS to acknowledge their views are counter-factual and anti-intellectual? I just don’t see how a TITUS supporter would pick up this book and find it “beneficial” to read。 I can guarantee you that if a TITUS member does read it, they will accuse it of being communist liberal propaganda。 The last section of the book summarizes and explains the current methods to bring white supremacists/insurrectionists to justice and acknowledges the glaringly overlooked fact that there are no laws against domestic terrorism, and to make such laws is problematic because it alienates some Republicans (in TITUS) and also could potentially violate the First Amendment。 How many more insurrections/coup attempts will it now take for Congress to author domestic anti-terror laws? When is it ok to curb First Amendment rights for the safety of the republic? This has been debated since the founding of our country, and there are no easy answers。 However, readers who didn’t pay attention to the news during the Charlottesville riot or Jan。 6 Insurrection will find this book most useful。 More importantly is how we as a country can move forward and unite under a common good in the face of fascist ideology under TITUS。 As the book implies that although citizens may never see themselves as “fascist,” there are lots of people who are, in truth, easily convinced by demagogues and, ideologically speaking, ignorant and manipulated by such forces if/when the time comes。 That time is now。 Now and the coming decades will see American institutions eroded and strained by the prospect of fascist ideology primarily under TITUS。 The author paints a stark portrait of such。 This is indeed a warning。**Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 This review contains my beliefs/takes only。** 。。。more

I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving a review。Be。 Very。 Frightened。I agree with pretty much everything in this book。 The author states he is a retired USA government intelligence officer (though I did not see anywhere exactly who he worked for & in what role)。 The main problem for me (& why I own several unread books on the Trump years) is there is too much awful, frightening (though accurate) information to absorb while keeping my sanity。 That said, this I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving a review。Be。 Very。 Frightened。I agree with pretty much everything in this book。 The author states he is a retired USA government intelligence officer (though I did not see anywhere exactly who he worked for & in what role)。 The main problem for me (& why I own several unread books on the Trump years) is there is too much awful, frightening (though accurate) information to absorb while keeping my sanity。 That said, this should be required reading for every American who isn't already a confirmed fascist。 (though I think "required reading" is a fascist statement, sigh)。 And that is part of the problem。 The authoritarian Republicans simply tell people what to do & their "fans" do it; where the progressives spend much time coming to a consensus (a process I agree with in theory, but it doesn't work in today's America because of the fascist far right); and as a result the republi-cons get the results they want the majority of the time。 And while most of today's problems (the poor response to Covid, Crime, the economy) were caused by Trump & Biden was handed a very difficult situation; Imo, Biden is the wrong person at the wrong time to lead us out of this, MAYBE Bernie Sanders could have, And with Manchin, Sinema & the alt-right packed supreme court, there isn't a lot the spineless Dems can do。 IMO, today's Dems are mostly Regan Republicans。While Donald the Clown plays a major role in this book, the main topic is the fascist right in America of which Trump is only one (major part)。 He legitimatized the racist, fascist right。 To paraphrase the author, the problem is that a certain number of whites in the USA don't have any self esteem other than being white。 As such, they HATE anyone who isn't an Anglo/Aryan white; because in their minds people of color have passed them on the "worthiness" scale。 In fact, the author basically calls most of the Proud Boys, Boogaloo Boys, etc, "obese" losers with no life & little intelligence。 That's a 2 edged sword: there is truth to that, & it also feeds the far right's belief that progressives are elitist。 His model is called "TITUS" & includes 4 different factions of the alt right。 While the author doesn't really discuss this, "MAGA" nation was created by Trump promising low income rural people that he would take care of them。 Sadly, they chose to not see that their lives became much worse under Trump, as he didn't help them at all; just made Covid Worse & took away benefits which even right wing fascists deserve if they are low income Americans。We are inches from a civil war or secession, which other than the violence, I as a progressive wouldn't mind。 In my mind, the only solution is to split the USA into 2 countries。 The problem is the progressive strongholds are on the 2 coasts, & the fascism is centered in mid-America, totally splitting up the Blue states by physical distance。 I personally wish we could get along, but I'm very concerned that we are past that point。As the author points out, a significant number of those who are supposed to protect us have already gone to the fascist side (police, military, government, etc)There is a phenomenal amount of information here; really too much to take in at one sitting。 It's like the actual Trump presidency, there were over 30,000 documented lies in 4 years + the campaign。 There is no way to keep up with it。 There is much more terrifying information in this book that I can paraphrase here。 Again, unless you are part of the 25% or so of Americans who are already confirmed violent fascists, please consider reading it。Another issue that few have talked about is it's really difficult to have effective political demonstrations in a pandemic, & the red states have been allowed to make it very difficult for progressives to vote (anti-voting laws) & to have their votes matter (gerrymandering)Our upcoming midterms & the next presidential election will determine whether we stay free or become a Western satellite of Russia。 VOTE, PLEASE VOTE progressive。 。。。more

But it seems that we’re among those who refuse to。 Or those who romanticize the brutal hatred that came before now。 And those who think that the hate and violence wasn’t enough of either。 That has me worried。 Because I live among many Q believers in an area that went solidly for Trump in both 2016 and 2020。 I know their opinions。 I know their hate and rhetoric all too well。 And yet, there is some hope。 I know that this book isn’t meant to be a happy bedtime story。 But it also isn’t a firm “this is our future” tale either。 Instead, it’s a solid warning with tons and tons of evidence pointing to what happened, why it happened, and what we need to do as a country to make changes for the better ASAP。 Maybe the warning will be heeded this time。 Either way, Malcolm Nance brought every single receipt with him to illustrate exactly what is at stake。 And I believe him。 。。。more

Malcolm Nance, an expert in extremism and counterterrorism, has written the definitive book on a threat that faces the United States。 Going back decades, Mr Nance provides a thorough history of extremist movement in the US, an overview and history of various groups of interest (militia, hate groups, fringe conspiracy groups, paramilitary groups, and yes…sadly, the GOP) and explains how these groups have become something blended, something dangerous—the Titus movement (Trump Insurgency [in] The U Malcolm Nance, an expert in extremism and counterterrorism, has written the definitive book on a threat that faces the United States。 Going back decades, Mr Nance provides a thorough history of extremist movement in the US, an overview and history of various groups of interest (militia, hate groups, fringe conspiracy groups, paramilitary groups, and yes…sadly, the GOP) and explains how these groups have become something blended, something dangerous—the Titus movement (Trump Insurgency [in] The United States。 He catalogues the evolution of the the groups over time, and explains how Tim McVeigh and the alt-right are connected。 TITUS, coalescing around the false belief that the election was stolen, has taken over not just the fringe of the Republican Party, Nance argues, but has bled in to the mainstream。 As evidence, he outlines the events leading up to the election and before and after the insurgency on the capitol。 The strategy is simple, he concludes。 TITUS aims to: 1) Deny the election was lost; 2) Attack democrats at all angles and attack the power structure of the government including the laws and constitution (those parts that do not serve TITUS) and attack the government itself—directly (January 6); 3) seek revenge of those perceived as enemies of TITUS (Cheney et。al。) and; 4) instill fear by stoking the absurdities of pizzagate and QAnon, etc。 Nance ties all the major headlines together in a cohesive history and a scary portrait of what could come。 Much included in the book will be familiar to those well read in the news but Nance puts all the familiar parts in to a compelling and frightening argument。 Thank you to St Martin’s Press via Netgalley for the book in exchange for my review。 。。。more

Senior Chief Malcolm Nance (USN Ret。) who was a Cryptologic Technician for twenty years as well as roughly a decade as a military contractor gives his case for the danger of a Trump Presidency as well as the danger of demagoguery associated with him。 Like him or hate him you should listen to him。

Malcolm Nance has often proved prescient in his analysis and interpretation of events related to international terrorism。 In this book he turns his attention to domestic terrorists who planned, organized, and implemented the January 6 insurrection at the U。S。 Capitol。 The information he provides and conclusions he draws about the disparate right-wing groups that coalesced around Donald Trump are not only alarming -but down-right terrifying for the future of our democracy。 All one needs to know a Malcolm Nance has often proved prescient in his analysis and interpretation of events related to international terrorism。 In this book he turns his attention to domestic terrorists who planned, organized, and implemented the January 6 insurrection at the U。S。 Capitol。 The information he provides and conclusions he draws about the disparate right-wing groups that coalesced around Donald Trump are not only alarming -but down-right terrifying for the future of our democracy。 All one needs to know about the true ideology of these groups is to simply read the last paragraph of Mr。 Nance's timely and important book。 。。。more

I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway。 And yes, I actually read the book。 And no, it does not encourage violence against right extremists。 This book lays out the different militia groups currently operating in the US and where some of the ideologies of QAnon came from。 Much of this is not new, especially the antisemitic sentiment。 The author puts all the pieces together of a confusing story that has been played out on national news stations。 I think this is an important wake-up call for e I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway。 And yes, I actually read the book。 And no, it does not encourage violence against right extremists。 This book lays out the different militia groups currently operating in the US and where some of the ideologies of QAnon came from。 Much of this is not new, especially the antisemitic sentiment。 The author puts all the pieces together of a confusing story that has been played out on national news stations。 I think this is an important wake-up call for everyone who cares about the United States and democracy。 Knowledge is power and understanding both sides of an argument can only aid in reconciliation。 。。。more

Ratings for this book will be crazy and high jacked by people who haven’t even seen it, much less read it。 And, yes, I am to the left in my political views。 Now on to my review。They Want To Kill Americans, by Malcolm Nance, covers the history that took place preceding and after the January 6 insurrection。 I found it well researched and logically presented, and most of all chilling。 I recommend it to open minded people, who are interested in the events around January 6 and the future of our count Ratings for this book will be crazy and high jacked by people who haven’t even seen it, much less read it。 And, yes, I am to the left in my political views。 Now on to my review。They Want To Kill Americans, by Malcolm Nance, covers the history that took place preceding and after the January 6 insurrection。 I found it well researched and logically presented, and most of all chilling。 I recommend it to open minded people, who are interested in the events around January 6 and the future of our country。 I thank the author and publisher for the advanced copy I received through Goodreads Giveaways。 。。。more

First off, you knew this would get review-bombed all to hell and back。 Awful lot of one-star reviews for a book that's not even on store shelves yet。 Also, thanks to Goodreads and the publisher for an advance reader copy。With that out of the way:Gods, this is an excellent, scary, stellar book。 Malcolm Nance takes a deep dive into the Trump cult, its past actions, statements and threats, and projects further violence。 He looks at the history of right-wing hate groups, religious terrorists, and in First off, you knew this would get review-bombed all to hell and back。 Awful lot of one-star reviews for a book that's not even on store shelves yet。 Also, thanks to Goodreads and the publisher for an advance reader copy。With that out of the way:Gods, this is an excellent, scary, stellar book。 Malcolm Nance takes a deep dive into the Trump cult, its past actions, statements and threats, and projects further violence。 He looks at the history of right-wing hate groups, religious terrorists, and insurgents in the United States。 He doesn't pull any punches, writing in a clear journalistic style and still putting out a clear warning about these threats。Strongly recommended。 Buy this book。 。。。more

"Buzzword buzzword Trump presidency buzzword inflammatory statement buzzword white supremacist" --Page 16, this book。 For someone who hates Trump so much, Nance sure spends a lot of time using his name--and profiting from its use。 I, too, think Trump is an idiot but I won't devote enough energy to write a book about him。 For those who are blindly giving this book ratings(good or bad) based on the title, you're all idiots too。 Maybe Mr。 Nance should focus on ways to unite Americans rather than fe "Buzzword buzzword Trump presidency buzzword inflammatory statement buzzword white supremacist" --Page 16, this book。 For someone who hates Trump so much, Nance sure spends a lot of time using his name--and profiting from its use。 I, too, think Trump is an idiot but I won't devote enough energy to write a book about him。 For those who are blindly giving this book ratings(good or bad) based on the title, you're all idiots too。 Maybe Mr。 Nance should focus on ways to unite Americans rather than fear mongering about a potential civil war。 For someone trying to warn about people who "want to kill Americans", he sure spends a lot of time encouraging readers that they need to be prepared to violently "defend" themselves AKA kill Americans。 But I suppose it's only ok to kill Americans if they don't have the same political views as you, huh?Everyone who stormed the capitol is dumb af, so is the author of this book, so are those who allowed it to be published, as are those who are rating it without reading it。 I'll save you some time, if you're considering giving it a read: if you're left leaning you'll agree with it, if you lean right, you won't。 。。。more

It all trickles down but I really hope that the trickle-down does not include Donnie Jr。 being elected anywhere and that Sr。 sends up in prison where he belongs。Yes, this is my personal opinion as a result of reading the book and, well, having a brain and has nothing to do with the book itself。 All political non-fiction books should invite and incite conversation like this one does and slag me all you want as both you and I are entitled to our opinions。I see this book flying off the shelves and causing many conversations: just make all weapons beyond your tongue and rapier wit are checked at your door。 。。。more
